New episodes of BSG started (Spoiler Warning)

January 18th, 2009

Last Friday the last 10 episodes of the new Battlestar Galactica started to air. As always the first episode of the half season was a real mind frak in BSG terms. The episode titled “Sometimes A Great Notion” tried very hard to beat the awesome cliffhanger ending of the last season where the gang found “earth”. Apparently this earth was destroyed by the cylons over 2000 years ago. One thing that I dont like about BSG is that the writers are too pessimistic. Its like everything and everyone on the show is miserable, they should really lighten up a little. That’s why I prefer Stargate to Battlestar Galactica stargate is much more humorous and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Now onto my review of the episode:

What Worked: As always the episode made me think, it asked more than it answered. Acting from both Mary McDonnell and Edward james Olmos were very good but all the supporting cast also performed exceptionally. The unexpected suicide of Dee was very unexpected and despite the fact that the final cylon is revealed at the last scene I think we should take that with a grain of salt. I personally still think Dee is a cylon but the way the series is going it might be apparent that the whole humanity might be descendants of cylons. This is why I am saying this show is frakking with your mind with each passing episode.Whether that is good or bad is up to the audience personally I like this aspect.

What Didn’t work: I personally did not like dark, gloomy atmosphere and the miserable crew. I understand the awful circumstances all they have fought for was for apparently nothing but the show is too damn depressing. They really need to lighten up. I also didnt understand and like the part of Starbuck in this episode. It didnt made any sense, what did she find on the planet, if it was herself than who is she? Much more questions from the writers. Anyway we’ll see how this arc will progress to the very end of the show but most of the producers and the actors guarantee that the end will be a bang. Somehow I have the feeling the show will not have a happy ending.

RIP Ricardo Montalban (1920-2009)

January 15th, 2009

It is a sad day for trekkies around the world as one of Star Trek’s greatest villians passed away. Ricardo Montalban, the handsome mexican actor first played the iconic role in the TV episode “Space Seed” in 1967. 15 years later he reprised the role in the motion picture “The Wrath of Khan” widely regarded as the best Star Trek movie ever. He will always be remembered by the trekkies. Here is a clip in his honor:

Turkish movie “Three Monkeys” in the final 9 for Foreign Picture Oscars

January 14th, 2009

Turkish film “Three Monkeys” by director Nuri Bilge Ceylan has been selected for the final 9 films of the foreign picture oscars. The nine films will be decreased to 5 at the end of the week. Lets hope a Turkish film officially gets an Academy Award nomination, as far as I know it will be a first in our nations history. Congratulations to Mr Ceylan and the cast and crew of “Three Monkeys” for their ongoing success after the Cannes Film festival where director Ceylan won the best director award. Lets just keep our fingers crossed and hope that “Three Monkeys” make it to the Oscars.

This should still be considered a success as the final 9 were selected amongst more than 60 films.

Review: Stargate Atlantis “Enemy at the Gate”

January 14th, 2009

Ok so here is my review of the series finale of Stargate Atlantis. First of all the episode definitely needed to be two hours. Everything seemed very rushed. It’s no surprise considering the fact that the producers learned the cancellation news very late. Overall the episode was an action packed episode that had everything but the kitchen sink. It had space battles, f302 battles, hive ship infiltration etc..

What worked: The pace of the episode definately worked, everything wrapped up nicely in 45 minutes despite being rushed. I’ll give the credit to the writers for accomplishing that. Seeing some old familiar SG-1 faces was also a plus in the forms of Samantha Carter and Major davis, although I dont understand why he still is a major after 10 years. The small tribute to the late Don S. Davis was also nice. (They are renaming the new earth ship Phoenix to the General Hammond) and finally it is of course always enjoyable to see Todd the wraith who I believe is the best character of the series played perfectly by Chris Heyerdahl.

What didnt work: I didn’t like the ending it was too contrived. (Atlantis landing on earth and appearing in cloak at the San Francisco bay) Also the “death” of Ronon was really cheaply handled by reviving him five minutes after his death. If you are killing a character make sure they stay dead have some drama FCOL. It doesnt have to be too dark like BSG but some drama always works and makes your heroes more vulnerable. That’s my review of this rushed series finale of Stargate Atlantis. Although I’d preffered a 6th season I still am looking forward to the new spin-off and the DVD movies.

Stargate Atlantis ends

January 14th, 2009

In case you didnt know the first spin-off of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis ended its five year run last friday with the series finale episode “Enemy at the Gate”. The episode earned high rating for the sci-fi channel getting more than 2 million viewers. Overall the final season of Atlantis ticked upwards in ratings compared to last year.

Now you might ask why the series was cancelled with improved ratings, well the producer and MGM decided to branch out the series to the format of DVD movies after the success of SG-1 DVD movies last year.

The new spin-off Stargate Universe will premiere next summer with a two hour pilot. The producers pitch this new spin-off as darker, edgier and more for the younger audience. Lets hope it doesnt turn into Stargate: Voyager or Stargate: 90210
