Stargate Universe first half

Monday, January 11th, 2010

This show seems to be the one show this season that really separated its fan base. There seems to be three groups battling it out over the internet, the lovers, the haters and the neutrals who like all the shows. While I didn’t necessarily liked all the episodes so far, I found the show enjoyable enough to like it so I consider myself in the group that likes all the Stargate shows so far.

What I don’t understand is the belief of some people that it is wrong for Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis fans to like the new show or that the Haters must hate all the other shows. While I could easily go the Shatner way and say: It’s just a show, I won’t because I believe that is rude for the fans, it may just be a show but lots of people are invested in it, therefore have the right to criticize if its not something they expected. We should also be aware that the producers told everyone before the show started to air that it will be a totally different show, so our expectations should have based on these descriptions.

One thing I would advise the producers to do in the second half of the season is to amp up the action a little. I know it is a drama but Stargate at its heart always had action.

Review: Stargate Atlantis “Enemy at the Gate”

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Ok so here is my review of the series finale of Stargate Atlantis. First of all the episode definitely needed to be two hours. Everything seemed very rushed. It’s no surprise considering the fact that the producers learned the cancellation news very late. Overall the episode was an action packed episode that had everything but the kitchen sink. It had space battles, f302 battles, hive ship infiltration etc..

What worked: The pace of the episode definately worked, everything wrapped up nicely in 45 minutes despite being rushed. I’ll give the credit to the writers for accomplishing that. Seeing some old familiar SG-1 faces was also a plus in the forms of Samantha Carter and Major davis, although I dont understand why he still is a major after 10 years. The small tribute to the late Don S. Davis was also nice. (They are renaming the new earth ship Phoenix to the General Hammond) and finally it is of course always enjoyable to see Todd the wraith who I believe is the best character of the series played perfectly by Chris Heyerdahl.

What didnt work: I didn’t like the ending it was too contrived. (Atlantis landing on earth and appearing in cloak at the San Francisco bay) Also the “death” of Ronon was really cheaply handled by reviving him five minutes after his death. If you are killing a character make sure they stay dead have some drama FCOL. It doesnt have to be too dark like BSG but some drama always works and makes your heroes more vulnerable. That’s my review of this rushed series finale of Stargate Atlantis. Although I’d preffered a 6th season I still am looking forward to the new spin-off and the DVD movies.

Stargate Atlantis ends

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

In case you didnt know the first spin-off of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis ended its five year run last friday with the series finale episode “Enemy at the Gate”. The episode earned high rating for the sci-fi channel getting more than 2 million viewers. Overall the final season of Atlantis ticked upwards in ratings compared to last year.

Now you might ask why the series was cancelled with improved ratings, well the producer and MGM decided to branch out the series to the format of DVD movies after the success of SG-1 DVD movies last year.

The new spin-off Stargate Universe will premiere next summer with a two hour pilot. The producers pitch this new spin-off as darker, edgier and more for the younger audience. Lets hope it doesnt turn into Stargate: Voyager or Stargate: 90210
